October 2007

October 2007 we traveled to the Smoky Mountains where we took a few snapshots of fall displays in the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area.

Following our east Tennessee visit we traveled onto Maggie Valley, NC to Ghost Town in the Sky. Ghost Town in the Sky is an replica of an old 1880 western town made into a theme park. Ghost Town originally opened in 1961 and then in recent history closed for many years until 2007 when it re-opened. The elevation of the town on the mountain is 4,600 feet and is accessible by chair lift although a bus is available to take you to the top. We opted for the chair lift!

Our travels continued onto Chimney Rock, NC (elevation starting at 1,000 feet). Typically mid October the leaves have changed but this year unusually warm weather has delayed the change. We hiked to the upper falls (elevation 2,600 feet) where due to this year's drought the water was very low.

Continuing in North Carolina we made a stop at Blowing Rock, NC elevation 3,500 feet.

Finally we drove/climbed over 5,000 feet to Grandfather Mountain and to the Mile High Swinging Bridge!

As a comparison the final link below was during the same time period in 2006. A severe drought and unusually warm temperatures in 2007 have made quite a difference in pictures.

As a final note, I want to mention Hampton Inn in Boone, NC where we stayed a few nights. Out of all the places we stayed during our travels this was by far one of the nicest hotels! Many of the pictures you see here were uploaded from their wireless internet connection.
